ASEAN have dialogue partners. The ten dialogue partners of ASEAN includes Australia, Canada, China, European Union, India, Japan, New Zealand, Russia, Republic of Korea (ROK) and the United States.

Development cooperation with dialogue partners is increasingly focused on strengthening economic cooperation, supporting ASEAN integration, addressing transnational concerns and promoting people to people contacts.

In 2016, ASEAN countries and China are celebrating the 25th Anniversary of ASEAN-China Dialogue Relations. The Reception to Celebrate the 25th Anniversary of ASEAN-China Dialogue Relations was held at Ciputra Artpreneur Theater in Jakarta last Monday 11 July 2016. Ambassador China Mission to ASEAN, H.E. Dr. Xu Bu said in his remarks that “25 Years ago, our leaders and predecessors, with their wisdom and vision, ushered in a new chapter of partnership for China-ASEAN relations. Thanks to the concerted efforts from both sides, the partnership with China has become the most vigorous dynamic one among relations of ASEAN with its dialogue partners. The past 25 years witnessed rich fruits borne by China-ASEAN practical cooperation to mutual benefit.”

There are three aspects of the meaning of the journey of 25th ASEAN – China Relationship from Public Relation Perspective. First is to  Build Important Relationship. China was the first dialogue partner to start negotiations with ASEAN on establishing Free Trade Area (FTA) of developing countries. China has been ASEAN’s largest trading partner since 2009, while ASEAN has been the third-largest trading partner of China since 2011. And So Prosperity for all and no one was left behind.

Second, endorse FRIENDSHIP. As an organization that interacts with all major world powers as well as the area that has great powers of the world, one of them with China , ASEAN should not be entered into the vortex of competition. ASEAN should be able to be an organization that actively interact in neutral through a variety of mechanisms have been established to maintain the dynamic balance of the region. Therefore, ASEAN’s efforts to be centered and oriented to the interests of the people (people centered and people oriented) should be the main agenda. China has become as A Friend of ASEAN. Friends doesn’t want to take advantage only on this kind of relationship. Friendship about Trust, Respect and Understanding.

Third, Build Good Image. Both ASEAN and China have a strategic interest in maintaining a peaceful, stable and thriving neighbourhood. This is in line with the ASEAN way which is described as a step that promotes ASEAN decision-making process through in-depth consultation and consensus. With the norm it is expected actions ASEAN member countries based on the norms that regulate the behavior not aggressiveness. This is certainly one of the drivers for China to choose cooperation with ASEAN.
